The exploding pen prank works similar to the fake lighter but only explodes when your victim takes off the pen’s cap. This is a terrific gag for the office or social occasions because the pen is easy to carry around with you in your pocket. All you need to do is say, “Hey can I get your email address?” and then hand them the pen. Wouldn’t it be great to have an accomplice ready to take a picture of your victim as they open the cap?
Recently I have been using the pen to get friends, family members and complete strangers by asking them, “Hey, do you want to see a magic trick?” I have never been turned down by anyone I have asked. They are always a little excited and agree to seeing the trick. I usually find a piece of blank paper to write on, hand it and fake pen and paper to them and say, “Okay. Now write down a number between 1 and 100.” I turn my back and wait for the real trick. Bang!!! When you pull this gag on strangers you will get mixed reactions. Some will think it is funny but most are a little annoyed and peeved at you. Many young single woman have thrown the pen at me and made a face, “Oh that was awful!” they snort. I believe it comes from them feeling they are about to see something special and exciting only to find out that they are on the butt end of a joke.
I have pondered purchasing 75 to 100 exploding pens just so I could leave one fully armed everywhere I go. The idea of this just strikes me as funny. I would leave them on park benches, in cafes, on the subway, at wedding tables, friends’ homes and almost anywhere else the pen would have the chance of getting picked up and checked out by an unsuspecting victim. Bang!!! Even if I wouldn’t hear it go off, I would still be able to envision the person’s reaction. They would be thinking someone was a real son of a bitch to leave an exploding pen to terrorize a person they don’t know.
